The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an Irish breed that has a single coat which sheds very little hair. This trait, combined with an outgoing and friendly personality makes them very popular and a big part of our pet clientele.
This lesson features Lindsey Dicken, an award-winning pet stylist who specializes in this breed. You’ll learn how to trim the pet Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier using snap-on guard combs. Using her techniques, this haircut comes together very quickly. Even though the haircut is shorter than a show trim, it still retains the classic look and integrity of the breed.
There are many variances in hair texture with this breed. The Irish version is more silky and wavy. The American version is much thicker and considered “wooly.” Both types of coat will mat heavily if the coat is not consistently groomed. In fact, Lindsey jokes that in her salon a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is “Irish for big matted yellow dog” if the client is not on a regular grooming schedule!
You’ll learn what it takes to get through this coat easily and hear about the products and tools that get best results.
If you have Soft Coated Wheatens coming into your salon, this is not a lesson to miss! Lindsey shows you how to execute this haircut in no time. This trim style is quick, easy, and it’s perfect for most pet owners who opt to have their pets trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks.
In this lesson, you will learn:
- how to quickly set the pattern.
- the one thing you have do when working on this breed.
- the best way to work with this coat type.
- how to shape the tail.
- the number one mistake most people make on the SCWT head.
